The formulation problem
The majority of skincare brands that dominate pharmacy shelves were developed with European skin tones in mind. For melanin-rich skin, that creates a real mismatch: ingredients calibrated for one skin type producing unexpected reactions in another.
Here are five signs your current products might not be right for your skin type.
1. Hyperpigmentation gets worse, not better
Many brightening products use concentrations of actives that work for lighter skin but trigger reactive hyperpigmentation in darker tones. If your 'brightening' serum is darkening your spots, the formulation likely isn't calibrated for you.
2. Moisturiser leaves a white cast
SPF and some mineral-based products are formulated with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide ratios that leave a visible white residue on darker skin. It's not a flaw in your skin; it's a formulation choice.
3. Cleanser leaves skin feeling tight
Over-stripping cleansers disrupt the skin barrier. Melanin-rich skin can be more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation when the barrier is compromised, making this more than just a comfort issue.
4. Products feel heavy in humid conditions
Formulations designed for colder, drier climates often use heavier occlusives that sit on the skin rather than absorbing in warmer, humid South African conditions.
5. Results take much longer than the packaging claims
Clinical testing timelines are often based on lighter skin tone cohorts. Your results may come, but the timing claim is often not calibrated for you.
What to do
Look for products with clear formulation notes for melanin-rich skin, ingredients like niacinamide and vitamin C at tested concentrations, and suppliers who are transparent about where and how products are tested.
